Will "Office 95" work with "Windows XP"?

I need to open MS Word files that people send me and my resume is in Word also. I thought "Open Office" would work just the same but now I hear it doesn’t really work.

I happen to have Office 95, brand new in shrink wrap because I couldn’t get rid of it. Now I wonder, can’t I just install it and the problem would be solved?
