C: Drive displayed as E:

I have a Seagate Baracuda HD in SATA 1 port of a KN9 SLI motherboard running Windows XP. There are no other drives in the system. Windows boots up, but when I go to My Computer, the only drive that shows up is E:. There is no C: drive. When I try to install a new program, it will not install on C:, because it cannot find the drive. Some programs run OK, but others don’t because they look for things on C:. I have tried to change the drive letter in the registry, and then Windows won’t boot. If I re-install Windows, it again only shows drive E:.

Anybody know how I can get this machine to show the boot drive as C:?

Thanks,

Marsh57
