1st Ever Build - $800 Budget

Apr 2, 2009 Author admin
Hey everyone! Well, I've finally made up my mind on building my 1st ever PC. I've been reading up a lot this weekend(random Tutorials, Wiki's, etc.), and I think I have a basic grasp so far of how to go about this, key word here being BASIC. :D

Getting straight to the point, my plans are to make this my Gaming rig, but an affordable one. Like the title mentions, my budget is around $800.

I already have an old PC that my friend built about 4-5 years ago, and hopefully I can scrounge up some parts from that. Concerning these old parts, I'm not actually certain what their specs are since it's been a long time since I thought about them. What I do remember is that the Sound Card is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, the DVD/CD drive is a 300gb at 7200rpm I believe, but I'm not sure what interface it uses(SATA,PATA), I already have a 19" LCD monitor, a keyboard and mouse, and a Windows XP Pro OS(don't really need Vista). Oh and do you think I can still reuse my old case? It's this one:

If I can reuse this one, I know I'll still need to buy a new PSU unit since this old one is only 300W. If I can't reuse this, any recommendations on a new case and PSU would be greatly appreciated. I don't need anything fancy.

Anyways, so far, I've picked out a few deals that I like that seem to go with my budget. What do you all think of these parts so far. I've just been looking at the "core" components at this point. None of these are final. Please let me know if I have any compatibility issues with these.

Video Card

Memory
OCZ Platinum 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

Anyways, yea, so that's what I have so far. Any and all advice/comments/recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again!

Virgin WiFi Anyone Got Some Time to Spare

Apr 2, 2009 Author admin
got my router and new netbook. I don't have wifi on my desktop pc so installed the computer to the router as a wired connection succesfully. trying to then add my Toshiba nb100 netbook that is already wifi enabled but with the virgin software i get the error message unsuuported wireless adaptor: then says your wireless adaptor does not support WPA . Please use a wireless adaptor that supports WPA.

Surely a brand new toshiba netbook would have an up to date wireless adaptor?

External HDD or No?

Apr 2, 2009 Author admin
Hey, I just got stuck with filming and editing for a church a friend of mine preaches for. I see that video is a resource hog lol. i currently have a 150G HDD with my OS and some other stuff on it, and a 300G HDD that I use for my game. According to the Vid Ed software I got (Pinnacle 12) I have roughly 19 hours worth of video room on my HDD. That's not really a whole lot as I want to save the raw material. i know I can just save 1 DVD of the finished material, but i want to save all the film for maybe a spoof DVD for him or something like that. Besides, if I tape something like the youth conference coming up, i can easily get close to 19 hours of video in a weekend. So...........

i was thinking of getting an external HDD. Mainly I have no room in my case for another HDD. Are external HDD's any good? If so should I get an ESata one or one that uses a firewire? Also what brand is a good one? Still WD? I looked at NewEgg and saw external HDD's 1TB or more from aboutt $100 (US) to over $2000. LOL I like the 100 option a whole lot more. It also looks like a 2TB drive costs more than buying two 1TB drives (mainly i compared the 1TB WD to the 2TB WD). Wouldn't it be smarter to buy a 1TB HDD and wait tilit filled to see if I needed another anyways as prices would most certainly go down as well?

Help With Turning Slave Hard Drive To Main Hard Drive

Apr 2, 2009 Author admin
hi guys i've posted on here before about a psu, everything went well with that but recently i got some stuff replaced including that because i changed case and the psu went bang.

thats not my problem however i've fixed that now and all is well apart from the hard drives.

i gave this to a mate who owns a pc service store and when i was giving him the pc i gave him this spair hard drive i had for ages because on my other hard drive i've got has various files of audio and programs for my sound engineering and production courses at college.

now i've fitted the hard drive and all is well apart from i cannot access my documents i think its because i have a password over my login name on that hard drive and it is a must that i get them because i've not bothered to back up 3 years of college work on my pc, i know it works however because i can access all files apart from My documents on the hard drive.

i've got 2 options here i think, one being to switch hard drives from slave to main but i have no idea how that works, or two being able to figure out how to access my documents.

i'm sorry i'm asking this but this is really really important to my work for the future, thanks guys once again

SD Card Not Recognized

Apr 2, 2009 Author admin
I am a new user and I hope this is the correct forum.

I am running XP home and am trying to download photos from an SD card using an inbuilt laptop slot.I have been able to do this in the past without problem and as I recall just inserting the card fully, caused the card to show up in my computer.
Now all I get is the plink sound but no card shows up despite pressing refresh and trying another SD card.
Both of these cards def have photos on when in the cameras viewer.
Can anyone please advise?

Many thanks

What’s That Weird "scrolling" Thingy That is Driving Me Nuts and How Do I Get Rid????

Hi all

Is it just me.... more often than not, when I am about to scroll my page, in anything, hotmail, Word whatever, I am just pointing the mouse arrow on the side bar, about to click, when this strange rectangular bar pops up on top of the arrow pointer, grabs the side bar and scrolls it at amazing speeds up and down at will.

This is just the most annoying frustrating thing in the world, you're reading something and want to just shift down a line or two and suddenly its back at the top or down two pages!

I've looked on 'help' thinking it is a windows helpful (but unbelieveably UNhelpful) tool that I can disable, nothing at all on scrolling. Have tried right clicking it, again no disable or delete choice.

Can anyone help before I got totally mental??? I have HP laptop with XP software - don't be too technical as I'm not up to more than basic stuff. Had a job registering as didn't understand the last two things to click on the form - nvtivia or something - just clicked anything in the end!! Also don't understand the columns below this message submission - parsing???? WOT? So you'll guess the standard of my IT knowledge.

Cheers
Greko
